In Eric Anthony Jones's work, self-governance is the capacity to govern your own responses, choices, attention, conduct and judgment. You do it while staying in genuine relationship with others. Fear, anger and habit still have a voice. None of them automatically gets the governing vote. That is what "Ruler" means in Ruler In Peace™.
The name is often misread as rule over other people. The About page answers that directly:
"'Ruler' does not primarily mean domination over other people. Governance begins with the human being — with the capacity to govern one's own responses, choices, attention, conduct, judgment, and contribution while remaining in genuine relationship with others."
— Eric Anthony Jones
"Ruler In Peace means the capacity to govern oneself — and one's contribution — from a place of genuine peace. Not as domination. As agency. As dignity. As capacity."
— Eric Anthony Jones
The Peacemaker's Challenge™ page frames the work this way: "It asks what governs you when life does not cooperate." It then names the idea at the center of self-governance:
"In this work, the governing vote is the final say over what a person actually does. Fear, anger, habit, desire and social pressure may all have a voice; none of them automatically receives the governing vote."
— Eric Anthony Jones
Two of the capacities the Challenge develops describe the same skill from different sides:
The live blog on nervous-system regulation states the principle from Eric's own reflection: "They all get heard. Not all of them get to govern."
Self-governance here is not independence from other people. The About definition keeps it "in genuine relationship with others." Self-determination research makes a similar distinction: Ryan and Deci (2000) describe autonomy as acting with a sense of volition and endorsement, one of three basic psychological needs alongside competence and relatedness, and not the same as independence from others.
It is also not a promise of perfect control. The Challenge page lists "perfect emotional control" among the things it does NOT promise.
In politics, self-governance means a community or nation governing its own affairs. That meaning is real and different. Eric's work uses the personal sense: a human being governing their own responses and conduct. In Eric's work the two connect, because the quality of what people build together depends partly on the people building it.

Self-governance is not suppression or perfect emotional control. Feelings are heard. The capacity is to stay present enough to choose with judgment, instead of letting impulse, fear or social pressure decide.
