Blog/Remain Capable of What?

By Eric Anthony Jones, known publicly as Ruler In Peace™

Short answer: You want to think clearly when life gets loud. Make choices you can stand behind. Stay open to people without losing yourself. Meet change with curiosity, courage, and room to grow. And remain capable of peace when peace becomes difficult.

That is the question behind REMAIN CAPABLE — Weekly Intelligence.

Knowing what matters is not the same as living it

You can know what matters to you and still struggle to live it when the day becomes difficult.

You want to listen, but the conversation touches a nerve. You want to make a considered choice, but the deadline is close. You want help with your work, but finding out whether the help was reliable becomes another job.

What helps us remain capable in those moments?

The answers above are not a standard to meet before you are allowed in. They belong beside ordinary decisions about work, relationships, attention, responsibility, and what we contribute to the lives of others. You might be leading a company, beginning again, or finding your way through an ordinary, complicated day. There is room here to be accomplished in one part of life and a beginner in another.

Why the question became personal

In a published account of building this publication in Bali, I described wanting AI to carry research and production work so I could spend more of my life living, studying, traveling, meeting people, and paying attention. "By the third day, the newsletter existed. The automation did not." Each failure, as I wrote then, "created a second assignment for me": finding the discrepancy, recovering the context, and deciding what could still be trusted.

That experience exposed a weakness in my own principle: "Having the final vote does not guarantee meaningful authority."

My song “What Grew” is, in its own description, “for the harvest that did not look like the plan, and the meaning that remained.” It sits here beside the Bali account of a build that did not go to plan.

AI is one doorway into this work, because it increasingly participates in human work and decisions. The human question reaches further. What happens to our judgment in disagreement? What helps us acknowledge a fact we would rather avoid? How do we remain truthful with ourselves and others? How do we protect dignity while making a difficult choice?

What I mean by Human Sustainability

Human Sustainability means preserving human dignity and developing the capacities that help us exercise agency, discern truth, regulate ourselves, make moral choices, and sustain meaningful relationships.

The question is not simply whether humanity can survive technological change. It is whether we can preserve our humanity through that change—and remain capable of peace when peace becomes difficult.

Across The Peacemaker's Passage™, I am examining nine human capacities: mindful awareness, regulation, perception, truthfulness, dignity, judgment, relationship, agency, and contribution. Mindful awareness means noticing what is happening within and around us and returning our attention to the present with openness and care.

This is an inquiry in development. The names help orient it; they are not a finished taxonomy or a promise that a list can resolve the pressures of a life. Mindful awareness emerged as the Passage developed. In practice it can begin with recognizing that we need time, that we are making an assumption, or that the person in front of us has not yet been heard.

What each issue brings

Each issue brings research, lived experience, and honest reflection into conversation with the life you are actually living—with a question to carry, a practice to try, and sources when you want to explore further.

Experience is presented as experience. Research is represented according to what it can support, limitations included. An interpretation remains open to challenge. You should be able to tell which is which.

You do not need to share my conclusions, spiritual commitments, or vocabulary to enter. Your questions and your experience belong in the conversation.

A beginning you can use today

Bring one unresolved situation to mind.

Ask yourself: What do I know happened? What am I adding to it? What matters in how I respond? What choice is available to me now?

You may find a practical constraint that requires help, an assumption that needs checking, or a need for a boundary, a conversation, or time before deciding.

The exercise does not guarantee calm or a solution. Its purpose is to make room for a more deliberate next step. That step also reaches other people: how you listen, what you question, the choices you make, and the dignity you protect.
